About Hokies vs 'Hoos
The Hokies vs.' Hoos Challenge originated with the Food Fight in 2005, which is now in its 8th year. In this event, each school competes to raise money and food donations for the Central Virginia Food Bank. This has been a huge success, producing 236,266 meals for the hungry in central Virginia in its first 7 years of existence.
In addition to our annual efforts to support the Central Virginia Food Bank, both area alumni clubs have expand our community outreach to work with other local non-profits:
- In 2007 and 2008, Hokies and ‘Hoos competed in the first ever cooperative collegiate build in Habitat For Humanity’s history, to see which team could raise more money to build a house in our community. In the end, UVA just barely edged out Virginia Tech by raising $32,641.33, to the Hokies $32,358.67. After the money was raised, Tech sent 102 volunteers and UVA sent 55 volunteers to construct the house over the next three months. During the holiday season in 2008, a deserving local family moved into a brand new home thanks to the combined efforts of Richmond’s Hokies and Wahoos.
- In 2008, Hokies and ‘Hoos joined up to increase community awareness and volunteerism for Special Olympics of Virginia. Throughout the spring both schools encouraged alumni and fans to donate online as part of the “R” Word Challenge, which aimed to change minds and vocabularies by discouraging misuse of the “R" word retard. Both teams also sent volunteers to cheer on the amazing athletes during Special Olympics’ Summer Games in early June.
- In 2008, Virginia Tech and UVA teamed up with Connor's Heroes, an area non-profit organization made up of volunteers, parents of children with cancer, and other caring individuals and companies who want to conquer childhood cancer through direct assistance, awareness, and fundraising. Both schools encouraged individuals to get registered with the National Bone Marrow Donor Program in order to help those battling cancer.
The best part of each of these friendly competitions is that Hokies and ‘Hoos don’t have to stand on the sidelines…..they can “get in the game,” compete to beat their rival and help their community in the process!
