This year’s a tie-breaker for the Hokies vs. ‘Hoos "Food Fight"
Richmond - After six years of heated competition, the rivalry between Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia has produced food and funds for more than 185,000 meals for the hungry in central Virginia through the annual “Hokies vs. Hoos” food drive. This year’s competition will be held at area Martin’s supermarkets during the week of the big U.Va. vs. Virginia Tech basketball showdown in Charlottesville on February 19th. Donation bins will be set up inside all Richmond-area MARTIN’S stores from Monday, February 14th through Sunday, February 20th.
After 6 years of this spirited contest, the Hokies and the Wahoos share bragging rights with three wins a piece, making 2011’s Food Fight a tie-breaker year. The Hokies vs. ‘Hoos "Food Fight" capitalizes on the fierce rivalry between Virginia Tech and UVA alumni and fans by encouraging donations during a time of year when the donations typically decline after the holidays.
Each can or box of food donated in the Virginia Tech or U.Va. bins in each MARTIN’S location will count for 1 point, and every dollar donated online between Friday, February 11th and Sunday, February 20th at www.hokiesvshoos.com will count for 5 points. The score will be updated daily throughout the week on the competition website, www.hokiesvshoos.com, with the winner to be announced on Tuesday, February 22nd. Several local middle and high schools will also join the “fight” this year to collect food donations, which will be collected and delivered to the Food Bank by employees of Clutter Cleaner, the competition’s title sponsor.
“MARTIN’S is excited to be part of this friendly competition between University of Virginia and Virginia Tech and can’t wait to see who will emerge victorious in the seventh year of this spirited rivalry,” said Jim Scanlon, regional vice president, MARTIN’S Food Markets. “We are encouraging fans, our customers and our associates to help support the Central Virginia Food Bank at a time when donations are most in need.”
“Bring it on Hokies!” stated U.Va. Alum Matt Shaver, and volunteer for the U.Va. Club of Richmond. “We’re ready to break this tie and anticipating a win,” replied Chris Vidler, alumni president of Virginia Tech.

2010 Hokies vs. 'Hoos "Food Fight" (2/1 - 2/13)
Richmond, January 27, 2010
Love those Wahoos? Can’t get enough of the Hokies? Whichever school has your loyalty, we’ve got one competition between the teams that gets you more involved than you’ll ever be by tailgating or sitting in the stands. The 6th annual Clutter Cleaner "Food Fight" capitalizes on the rivalry between Virginia Tech and UVA alumni and fans to encourage donations to the Central Virginia Foodbank. Last year, this week-long food and fund drive was one of the largest for the Foodbank at a time when donations typically drop after the holidays. UVA won last year, but the Hokies remain ahead all-time with 3 wins, versus 2 for the Wahoos.
This year's competition will be held at all Richmond area Ukrop's stores from Monday, February 8 through Saturday, February 13. Each can or box of non-perishable food donated in either team's barrels will count for 1 point, and every $1 donated online at www.hokiesvshoos.com will count for 5 points. The website will start taking donations on Monday, February 1. You can track the score throughout the week on the competition website, www.hokiesvshoos.com, with the winner to be announced on Wednesday, February 17.
Will the 'Hoos tie it up this year or will the Hokies dominate the series with 4 wins? You can help answer that question by stopping by a Ukrop's or visiting the website to help your favorite team defeat the rival, as well as hunger, in Central Virginia!

Clutter Cleaner sponsors 5th Annual Hokies vs. ‘Hoos "Food Fight"
Richmond, Feb 10, 2009--Sometimes, rivalries bring out the best in even the most die-hard fans. After four years of heated competition in raising food, the rivalry between the Virginia Tech Hokies and the University of Virginia Wahoos has produced more than 150,000 pounds of food for the Central Virginia Foodbank.
Clutter Cleaner is sponsoring the 5th Annual Hokies vs. ‘Hoos "Food Fight," which capitalizes on the rivalry between Virginia Tech and UVA alumni and fans to encourage donations to the Central Virginia Foodbank. Last year, this week-long food and fund drive generated half of the four-year total, with the equivalent of more than 75,000 pounds of food raised at a time of year when food donations tend to drop after the holidays. Virginia Tech won bragging rights in 2008 with a higher percentage of contributions credited to the Hokies.
This year’s competition will be held at Ukrop’s stores during the week of the big UVA vs. Virginia Tech basketball showdown in Charlottesville on February 18th. Donation bins will be set up inside all area Ukrop’s stores from Monday, February 16th through Saturday February 21st. Each can or box of food donated in the orange and blue or orange and maroon barrels will count for 1 point, and every $1 donated online at www.hokiesvshoos.com will count for 5 points. The score will be updated several times throughout the week on the competition website, www.hokiesvshoos.com, with the winner being announced on Monday February 23rd.
"This year’s drive will be especially important to hunger relief, because increasing economic hardship leads to a rise in food requests," notes Fay Lohr, CEO of FeedMore, the umbrella organization of the Central Virginia Foodbank and Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia. Requests for food at the Foodbank have increased by 73% over the past six months, as the economy has worsened. Tens of thousands of pounds of food are withdrawn by hundreds of partner agencies in central Virginia each day to feed hungry children, seniors, the working poor, and others.
So whether you’re a Hokie, a Wahoo, or neither, join the food fight by making a donation to benefit the Central Virginia Foodbank between February 16th and 21st at Ukrops or online at www.hokiesvshoos.com.

Donate money or volunteer your time over the next eight weeks during the Hokies vs. Hoos Habitat Challenge
This Wednesday, July 16, Hokie and Wahoo alumni, friends, family and fans from around the Richmond area will gather together off of Wamsley Boulevard on Angus Road to begin what is known as an eight week "blitz build" for Angela Randolph's family.
"It's been very difficult…since both universities are also undergoing major fundraising initiatives [themselves]," said Matt Shaver, Philanthropic chairman for the UVA Club of Richmond.
"Even though this is an initiative for both the alumni chapters, the schools themselves are looking for fundraising. That coupled with the economy itself and the amount of nonprofits competing for the same dollars, it's really tough to set yourself apart."
Luckily, the two alumni organizations were able to separate themselves from the rest and gain a little attention from one of Richmond's newest corporate residents, MeadWestvaco.
Back on June 23, MeadWestvaco announced an official corporate sponsorship and donation of $20,000 towards both teams of the Habitat Challenge which, according to Shaver, has made all the difference.
